Freedom of Expression is an Islamic Right
It is truly reprehensible that the British police have elected not to defend Dr Usama’s Hasan’s inalienable right to free expression following his nuanced vindication of the theory of evolution. On the basis of his scholarly training and expertise, Dr Hasan (like classical Muslim scholars such as al-Jahith, Ibn Miskawayh and Ibn Khaldun before him) postulated the idea that Islam is not in conflict with the evolutionary transformation of life on earth. Instead of defending his right to free speech and safeguarding his civil liberty, the authorities advised this Muslim scientist who also serves as a Friday imam to stay away from his father’s East London mosque. But this has simply emboldened the non-scientific mob baying for his blood.
While Usama Hasan is not the first Muslim figure, past or present, to embrace evolution, he has now been unjustly branded as a heretic to be killed by a pernicious Wahhabi-Salafi cabal seeking to impose ‘shari’ah’ conformity and ideological intolerance in the UK. The tragic outcome for rational British Muslims is that Usama Hasan has apparently caved in and has been forced into a humiliating retraction of his scientific beliefs. Even this recantation has not been sufficient to placate his fanatical Muslim opponents to lift the ridiculous mullah-generated fatwah (opinion) of apostasy and heresy.
In a momentous week in which the Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford (MECO) publicly condemned on 4 March 2011 the malevolent clergy of Pakistan for fostering the religious fanaticism that led to the brutal murder of Shahbaz Bhatti, that country’s only Christian cabinet minister, (http://britishpakistanichristian.blogspot.com/2011/03/muslim-leaders-condemn-blasphemy-law-of.html), MECO openly endorses and supports free-thinkers like Usama Hasan and other theological iconoclasts. There is no inherent incompatibility between Islam and evolution. This modern hypothesis certainly does not contradict the Holy Qur’an – but it certainly does expose and undermine the fabricated hadith (traditions), the farcical ijmah (consensus) and the fatuous fatwahs (opinions) of mullah Islam.
It is incumbent therefore that British Muslims learn to agree to disagree and not to foolishly replicate the horrendous mind control and the abysmal lack of free-thinking that are the depressing hallmarks of a toxic Saudi-Pakistani Islam. Muslims should be empowered by the assurance that Qur’anic Islam gives everyone the inalienable right to freely dissent and not to blindly follow the majority (2:256; 10:99; 109:6; 6:116, 10:36, etc). Only when Muslims return to the pristine precepts of Islam’s transcendent text by jettisoning thetwisted perversions of mullahism, will Islam regain its proper place in the community of nations.
