Now that legislation has been passed outlawing ‘the glorification of terrorism’, the government and police need to be reminded (again) that they can already charge all those who incite murder and violence under existing statutes. Those extremists, who recently reveled in shouting provocative slogans and holding inflammatory posters that brought such disrepute to British Muslims, must not escape prosecution and imprisonment. What is particularly distressing to the majority British Muslim population is the discovery that most of these ill-conceived hand-written placards were the handiwork of burqa-clad women.

Apparently, while insisting that they are following their narrow cultural interpretation of Islamic law, these fully covered Muslim women see nothing contradictory or incongruous in provoking retaliatory bloodshed and brutality when the Holy Qur’an itself, as opposed to ossified theologians, calls for mutual respect and interfaith tolerance. Not for the first time have Muslims in the UK been embarrassed by the unedifying spectacle of their radical co-religionists. Men and women who on the outside don traditional garments and dress styles to project a superficial image of Islamic devotion, but who are, in reality, deeply rotten inside.

No truly pious Muslim could ever be party to such vicious and bloodthirsty overreaction when opposing (legitimately) the gratuitous ridiculing of the Prophet Muhammad. Too often Islam is portrayed as a culture when in fact it is a religion. British Muslims, particularly women, must distinguish between what is culture and what is the creed and not to confuse the two. The first step in this liberating process is to place less emphasis on customary and cultural clothing in order to be fully integrated law abiding British citizens.
